A man accused of driving while intoxicated is behind bars, according to local sources. The Tennessee man has a long history of motor vehicle infractions, with this being his 12th drunk driving charge. It is important to remember that, when it comes to repeat DUI offenders, alcoholism is a disease that can run rampant if left unchecked, altering the way individuals might otherwise behave.

Police arrested the man on the evening of April 2, when it was reported that a black truck was on the wrong side of the road and had become stuck on a median. Attending officers noted signs of possible intoxication on the man, who allegedly told police he was too drunk to take a field sobriety test. He was subsequently arrested when police apparently discovered he was driving on a revoked license.

The man faces one count of DUI, one count of driving on a revoked license, violation of implied consent laws, and habitual motor vehicle offenses. If he is found guilty, it is likely his license will remain revoked. He may face jail time as well. Currently, however, no court date has been set to deal with his case.

In situations where an individual with a clearly defined drinking problem becomes a habitual offender, it may make sense for a Tennessee court to take into consideration the danger of a disease like alcoholism. Jail time may not be an appropriate measure as it may not help the man keep from drunk driving in the future. Instead, the defense may wish to negotiate for court-ordered rehabilitation as a means of hopefully setting the man back on a path of sobriety.
